Both IISL and ECSL are permanent observers to the COPUOS Legal Subcommittee.
This Symposium brings together academic experts and leading practitioners in the field of space law, policy and regulation to discuss pressing issues and to propose solutions to the international community.
Abstract of the Symposium Programme
The IISL/ECSL Workshop on Capacity-Building in Space Law supports international cooperation towards education and training in space law and related fields at COPUOS.
Outer space is seen nowadays as a strategic asset by different stakeholders. Our contemporary world relies upon, and is enabled by, a complex space infrastructure. The rapid growth of space activities, the diversification of space actors and a booming space economy have opened opportunities while raising new challenges to the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.
To harness the potential of space activities for the benefit of every nation, cooperation mechanism and regulatory frameworks have been increasingly devised in both the international and domestic level.
Capacity building is instrumental in supporting the rule of law in outer space, considering international principles as well as local perspectives. Training and education on space law and related fields is in high demand around the globe, whether at major international research centres or among nations of the “Global South”.
The IISL/ECSL Workshop on Capacity-Building Space Law purported to foster educational platforms in Space Law around the globe. Through open dialogue and effective collaboration, different programs were introduced by selected speakers, considering current developments and long-term needs.
